Get the Short Term Recovery Care conversation started with these three questions:
Follow up with all of your clients about Short Term Recovery Care (STRC) to help fill their health care coverage gaps. STRC provides coverage for temporary confinement situations (less than one year) such as home health care, nursing facility care, assisted living, and more due to illness or injury.
Ask these three questions to get the conversation started.
- Do you know anyone who needed temporary care after a medical procedure or who has had to be in a nursing home? Medicare typically does not pay for these types of services.
- If needed, do you have the funds set aside to pay for nursing facility care out of pocket? On average, the cost for a private room in a nursing home is $92,378 per year.*
- If you’re relying on loved ones, do they have the time and ability to take care of you? On average, informal caregivers who live with their care recipient spend about 40 hours per week providing care.**

Underwriting decision = Accept Preferred
Basis for decision: Dale is showing well-controlled blood pressure readings and is compliant with his medications; therefore, he would be eligible for coverage.
Dale’s average blood pressure readings are 155/93, and while his medications are prescribed to be taken daily, he only takes them sporadically.
Underwriting decision: Decline
Basis for decision: Dale is showing poor control with his blood pressure readings, and he is non-compliant with his medications. Based on this higher risk, he would not be eligible for coverage.
Underwriting prescreening available for agents
As a Medico agent, you can call 800-626-2068 to speak directly to an underwriter. This allows you to discuss a potential applicant’s health history with the underwriter and receive guidance on whether or not to submit the application. Based on the information available, the underwriter may be able to provide you with additional questions to ask the applicant to help determine whether he or she should submit an application. Prescreening is not a guarantee the applicant will qualify.
