Action Needed for Some Members: Transition to Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) Beginning Jan. 1, 2020, CMS will no longer accept an individual’s HICN; all transactions must include the consumer’s/member’s Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI). 2019 was a transition year and CMS accepted both the HICN and MBI but this will end on Dec. 31, 2019.
